Indian Students Ace IGCSE Exams

When the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) analyzed the results from the examinations it had conducted in around 150 countries, Indian students proved to be among the best at beating the world average.

15,000 Class 10 and 12 Indian students took the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) examinations. 34% of them scored top grades of A and A*. The world average was 28%.

Ian Chambers, the regional CIE head for South East Asia, was all praise for India and its students. “As a nation, there is a lot of emphasis on academics here. Indian students are a lot more diligent. Also, children here have a lot more parental support, which makes them fare better.”

There are a large number of schools that follow the IGCSE curriculum in India, 45 of which are located in Mumbai. This number is growing at the rate of 40% per year.

According to surveys conducted and analysis of results, Indian students performed exceedingly well in the examinations of 2007, with only 7% scoring E grade. Mathematics, science, economics and business studies are the subjects which Indian students seem to have a natural flair for and are their strong points.

Principals of IGCSE schools in India are well aware of the fact that their students are excellent at logical subjects but need to work more on language based subjects. Schools abroad emphasize on communication skills and this trend is yet to pick up in India.

The IGCSE curriculum provides a flexible course of study and students are offered a choice between core curriculum and extended curriculum. The students are free to choose subjects according to their interest and tend to score better.
